Laylock was founded with a single purpose, providing soldiers modular, lightweight and dependable field fortification on the modern frontline. As drone-saturated conflict redefines the threats soldiers face in prepared positions, Laylock is engineering the answer: a flat-pack, man-portable protection system that gives infantry rapid overhead cover and blast protection without specialist equipment or heavy logistics.

Battlefield analysis of high-intensity conflict reveals a consistent vulnerability: existing trench and prepared-position doctrine offers insufficient protection against modern UAV threats. Overhead cover is either absent, improvised, or too heavy to deploy rapidly at the point of need.

From Q1 2025 to Q1 2026, founder Ian Kidd leads a full year of deep requirements capture - drawing on a decade as a combat engineer to define, from the user's side of the wire, exactly what rapid overhead protection has to do in the field.

The requirements baseline becomes a working proof of concept, developed with MLDE acting as design consultancy - translating a year of front-line battlefield realities in Ukraine into a viable proof of concept.
